Why We Need an Emotional Clean Sweep
I wrote about how important I feel it is to protect your heart and I’m referring to our spirit. When we stop guarding, we move away from where we should be; what we should be doing. We “fall off the wagon.” I really think guarding your heart is so important that you have to do it when you go to bed, when you awake, when you’re traveling – until it becomes second nature. Here’s why.
In Proverbs 4:23 the Bible tells us to guard our hearts because life flows from our hearts. So spiritually, if our arteries become clogged with bad attitudes and thought patterns, then we can’t enjoy life. If we maintain correct heart attitudes, our hearts will be clean and life will flow from us.
So what are these attitudes that will keep our spiritual arteries clean? So glad you asked.
In my studies I have found that a willing heart is key. You see, a willing heart remains obedient to whatever God asks. A willing heart produces genuine generosity. (Say what??) OK, for example, in Exodus 25:2, God spoke to Moses – Tell the Israelites that they are to set aside offerings for me. Receive the offerings from everyone who is willing to give ungrudgingly with his heart.
When a person not only gives but gives with a willing heart and gives generously, life flows through them. By blessing others we live out God’s love and we ourselves are blessed.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 “Remember, a stingy planter gets a stingy crop; a lavish planter gets a lavish crop. I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over and make up your mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.”
To keep this “willing” heart the spirit must overpower the flesh. OK, giving with a willing heart doesn’t necessarily mean you feel like it. My flesh doesn’t always want to give. I understand that my flesh and the spirit are always warring with each other.
The flesh – our feelings; what WE want
The spirit – what GOD wants
Ready to learn how to get that “Emotional Clean Sweep?” Understand that your free will, energized by the Holy Spirit, CAN override your feelings. You see, every time I feel like doing the wrong thing but choose to do the right thing, I AM GROWING!
Victory is having emotions but not letting my emotions have me!
And I believe one of the most important things I can tell you is to stay motivated, excited about this. In Romans 12:11 we’re told – “Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant.” We really need to stay amazed that God loves us. (WOW – again!! ->) We really need to stay amazed that God loves us! If we focus on His great love for us, we will remain willing to serve Him.
Revelation 3:19 “The people I love, I call to account – prod and correct and guide so that they’ll live at their best. Up on your feet, then! About face! Run after God!!”
I find that God actually does correct us and helps us to keep our flesh in order. This should keep us excited and willing to serve Him because it means He loves us! Stay in the Word and pray for God to help you in your life. Stay on track – I’m praying for you, you can do it!
