Which Protein Powder is Best?

Dave and Jarrow Protein shakeYou may not agree, but I believe everyone should be consuming protein in a shake form. And just recently I found I wasn’t ingesting enough of the stuff. For years I’ve been taught you can get enough proteins from veggies, and you probably can – but you’re not going to.

What I mean by that is you are not going to eat the quantity of veggies necessary to get the amount of protein you should be eating. You should be getting 1.25 grams x your body weight in pounds. So, for me, for example – today I am at 184 pounds – then multiply 184 x 1.25 and you get 230. That means I need at least 230 grams of protein a day.

How many grams of protein are in that shake you drink? You don’t drink one?

You should. Think of it. When you supplement with the right amount of protein, your body then actually has the stuff it needs to do what it needs to do.

Remember that protein comes from all kinds of stuff. One is chicken – a typical chicken breast is 45 grams. And other foods are loaded as well.  But a powder shake is an easy and great way to get what you need.

Why?

Because scientifically formulated for years now, protein powders have been found to be easily assimilated into the bloodstream and used efficiently.

Nutrition Label for ProteinAnd my study into them tells me that a whey protein isolate delivers more and better than a concentrate.  Gram for gram, isolate processing yeilds more.  Research has found that only whey proteins in their natural, undenatured state have the ability to perform their characteristic biological functions.  Look for a brand that is processed under low temperature and low acidic conditions – isolate!

Costco has a great choice for around $22 and each scoop is 20 grams of whey protein isolate, no fat!  In addition, I chose a brand named Jarrow from Whole Foods that was down-right tasty and is good for the whole family.

Whatever you do, I suggest you try a whey protein isolate shake to supplement your diet.  And let me know how you feel afterwords!  It’s a great way to get the protein you need to have your body do what it needs to do.

Dave JacksonWhen I waited for the results of my second blood test to be interpreted by my doctor and good family friend, I snagged two words from her 20 minutes of explanation: “they’re related.” In my case, she was referring to Celiac, an autoimmune disease that boils down to an allergic reaction to wheat and other gluten, and – guess what – Thyroid problems.

For months I was experiencing nervousness. Not quite to the point of shaking, but I had trouble talking and getting my thoughts together. I didn’t stutter, but my whit and smoothness I’d experienced in my over 15 years as a radio talk show host and deejay were gone. I thought I was drinking too much coffee, or that somehow my nerves were getting shot. It wasn’t until I was getting progressively worse with the tremors and heart palpitations that I had to know.

We are a crazy being – but in my mind I thought not knowing would maybe make it go away. Whatever the case, know that when you do find out from blood tests, you can then start on a road to a cure. This is what I did.

My doctor announced, “You have a thyroid problem.” Ah, OK… hmmm? A million and one things run through your mind when you get a diagnosis. My mind didn’t go back to the dentist who caused all the problems in the first place. I hope and pray he’s no longer experimenting on his patients. But it did run through what other things in my lifestyle I might be doing to exasperate my “hyperthyroidism.”

As expected, my doctor had two solutions: use radioiodine to burn the gland (my thyroid) out of commission and take drugs to compensate for the hormones lost for the rest of my life, or – operate and remove the thyroid surgically. I love her and she’d done a ton for my family, but she probably knew me too well to think I’d go along.

I did have a radioisotope scan on a very expensive machine that took an hour or so to take a picture of my thyroid – but it turned out normal with no nodules. So what can I say?

Anyway – no radioactive anything for me – or surgery. God put a thyroid in me and I was determined to find out if others have had success in getting cure. And here’s where the Internet came into play big time. I had found some things that helped me with my celiac. But it turned out I was already acclimated to the diet and I get all the nutrition I need. I don’t care to eat wheat.

However, hyperthyroidism affects a ton of stuff. My TSH levels were non-existent. I had a long road ahead of me. My research took me to a website that was created around the turn of the century… well the year 2000. Here was a fellow that found by much research his hyperthyroidism was caused by a deficiency in minerals. The site is IThyroid.com.

You’ve probably already clicked there, but when you come back here let me tell you my own findings as John’s are scattered and no longer updated. It’s like anything else; when you get success, you rarely go back down the road to the cure. You’d rather be as far from it as possible. So I don’t blame John. Just wish he would assign someone as a caretaker.

I have certain supplements I take that I’ll share in another post – along with the amounts and my thinking on each, with how I feel physically when I take them, and another key ingredient that will blow you away! :-) So hang in there and I promise you’re going to love the ending.

Talk soon,
Dave

How to Stop Worry and Anxiety

Otis Worries but you don't have to.

Otis Worries but you don't have to.

Why is it that it’s so easy to worry about anything? And like something combustible, it we continue to worry, we simply feed the fire and eventually get sick. Maybe you’ve never been there, and if not – good for you – but for the millions who struggle with this very natural feeling, let me tell you how I work with it.

I bet if you’re worrying, you don’t have a game plan written down with a lot of specifics. I’m not talking about a to-do list. I mean sitting down and writing out your goals for this year. If you want a really cool sheet for doing this, shoot me an email and I’ll send it to you. This is a must.

When you have where you’re going in clarity, everything else falls in place. And the first step in busting worry is defining the situation clearly in writing. So much I have found can be solved just by defining the issue. As they say, “Accurate diagnosis is half the cure.”

See that notepad on your desk? Grab a pencil and write what is the worst possible outcome of the situation. What’s the absolute worst? Get this clear in your mind and on paper.

And yikes – not sure you’re gonna like this one, but it’s being willing to have it so. Say, what? Resolve to accept the worst should it occur. That’s my first piece of advice – being willing to have it so. Once you resolve to accept this, well… your mind will become more calm and clear and you’ll be ready to snap out of depression and take action.

Got it? If you’re dwelling on the problem instead of the solution, you’ll be depressed. Time is on your side, most of the time – you will have enough time to work out this plan.

Snapping out of that mood is like someone throwing cold water on you – your state changes and you say – OK, that was interesting – now, I got to get down to work. OK? If you’re not clear on this, use the contact form and I’ll make sure to explain it more.

Now that you and I are clear on that – the next step is to do something. Take some action. What I suggest is begin immediately doing everything possible to improve the worst.

Still worrying?

Worry is just a sustained form of fear caused by indecision. Wanna know how to get over it? ACTION. Get your butt in gear and do something about your situation. And guess what? You won’t have time to worry. Take action and watch your confidence rise, your courage and control returns. And fear… is gone.

Still have the paper handy? Make a list down one side of the things that you believe are stressing you out. Next on the other side of the page, write the worst possible thing that could happen as a result. And tell me if this doesn’t help the worry just disappear!

If you were a visitor to this planet, you’d probably wonder why everyone was under such stress.  Looking around, it’s not apparent that we’re in a recession – not at this writing.  And I know you can choose not to participate in that, but I want to tell you what I think about the current situation with the U.S. economy.

Most Americans have lived beyond their means for the past two decades.  I don’t claim to understand everything about it, but so much credit has been extended that now the strength of many companies is withering.  Everything around us is so tightly woven into our earnings that complete companies can fail if too many of us can’t make our monthly payments.

And it really struck me the other day, while listening to Tom Alkazin on home based businesses, that it really is a tiny amount that brings down the house of cards.  He said something like the extra $200 – $300 a month that a small business would give you, is just what is needed to stop bankruptcy.

The way that works is remember, if you have a bill for $250 each month, and can not pay it for a time – it snowballs.  It doesn’t go away – so a little money from another stream would help.

Think of that on a nationwide scale and you have what is happening to thousands of companies.  And thousands upon thousands are being sent home from work without a job.  As bleak as that is, there is a silver lining in it for you.

The first wave you will see will be normal stores begin to offer better customer service.  Competition will become fierce as companies place prices as low as they can and still remain in business.  With the huge cuts, companies will have lower overhead.  Still some will fail.  And I believe those companies that play around with creative pricing will fail as well – because deep discounters will put them away.  We all want a good deal.

So look for pricing wars, and customer service bonuses galore, right now, in the bigger retailers.  For example, at cosmetic counters see special treatment, and businesses that sell similar products – take advantage of the pricing wars.  Unfortunately, the only way you can do that is by subscribing to your local newspaper, and by watching the local newscast – both which are appaling to me.

The next wave will bring service closer to home.  The days of doctors making house calls will return.  Specialists in all sorts of areas will be knocking at your door offering special deals.  You’ll have to be keen to know which is best.  Try creating a neighborhood group, or even a small group of neighbors that come over to play cards and discuss these “deals.”

Home based businesses will spring up everywhere.  The problem is knowing which one may be right for you.  Here is my view.

Look for a company with a strong history.  There are many new companys coming online.  Stay away from them.  There are enough old companies with workable businesses that you can get involved with.  My view here is that the track record for brand new home based business companies is atrocious.  You’re going to have to work to make money.  Why not work for a company that is going to be around for a long time.  Many people have been burned badly by companies that folded overnight – after having put years of hard work into them.

I’ve started a few home based businesses, and there are a few things that need to be right in order for you to succeed.  One, is the company, as I mentioned.  Another is the product.  I am amazed at how many companies out there are set up for one time sales.  Find a company that is producing something that is consumed on a daily basis.

And finally, find a company that has a low to zero start up cost, and doesn’t require you to buy stock.  With the Internet, it is just too easy to order online and drop ship.  This is efficient.

So watch for the markets to adjust, or correct; be aware of the many advantages of huge sales companies will have.  And then start your own stream of income.
