What Happens When We’re Rebellious
I thought this picture was so appropriate for what I want to share. When we don’t like that path our Father wants us to follow, it’s so easy to stop listening and do our own thing…and sometimes even act like we belong to another family.
This morning I opened God’s Word to Isaiah, and well, actually I was reading over in Psalms and I find myself there a lot – for so many reasons: comfort, direction, protection, guidance… and maybe best of all because David is so totally relatable.
But God has been putting Isaiah on my heart and I’m not sure why. If you flip through the pages of the book it’s written almost like Psalms and Proverbs…Job, etc. Like tiny bites of wisdom.
And so I wanted to dissect it to understand it even more and maybe by doing so apply some of it to my life. I mean, isn’t that what scripture is there for? So let’s jump right in.
Isaiah just has to be so well connected with God that he gets messages you and I wouldn’t – unless we were leading the same sort of life – AND were chose to deliver those messages. I don’t think he’s mentioned earlier in the Bible – just pops up here after Song of Solomon. And he starts in on this laundry list of reasons why the nation of Judah and the city of Jerusalem are doing what the boy in the picture is doing – just being rebellious.
In verse 2, Isaiah wants everyone’s attention – even heaven. It says there – listen, O heavens. Am wondering why the plural? In any case, the message is intended for Judah in general. And he starts out speaking on behalf of God. He even says – this is what the Lord says!
You know it’s one thing to stand on the corner holding a sign and saying the end is near, but I’m pretty sure Judah could totally resonate with what Isaiah was saying. They kinda knew they were rebellious. Like the kid in the picture, you WANNA be rebellious – because, well – it’s in our nature – we’re “wired” that way. The fight is to be organized, good, happy, on track – from my experience, anyway, all the negative stuff in our lives flows easily. It’s the positive that we have a challenge making happen.
So straight away Isaiah says, speaking for the Lord – “My own children who I raised and cared for have rebelled against me.” Pretty significant because as a parent you spend a great deal of your time when raising the child – to teach them principles that are supposed to keep them from rebelling and keep them on track.
From my studies, all because of what happened in the Garden of Eden, stuff from that point forward is messed up on a pretty big scale. In other words, no matter what we do as parents, if we don’t also instill the tools to “keep” kids on track, PLUS let them know, as God is doing through Isaiah, that they are “off-track”, well… they will end up living so far from the stuff we’ve taught them that we often think it will take a miracle or intervention to get them back “on-track.”
I am anxious to see what God will do with Judah. Isaiah starts in and obviously there’s a reason God is telling Judah they are screwed up. Hope you’ll check back or subscribe here and catch my next post when I dive into the next few verses in this book.
In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions on how I’m interpreting Isaiah or how it applies. Just leave a comment below and I’ll reply. Make it an awesome day!
