How to Seek God’s Will

by Dave Jackson

Dad & RachelAs Rachel’s dad I do my best to train her to many things – save money, eat healthy, pick up after herself. But the most import skill I want to instill in her is how to follow God’s direction. I have more recently asked my family to pray for things they may think trivial, and remember to keep praying for the more important decisions. God wants to be involved in everything.

John made it so clear in 1 John 5:14-15, and lately I tell my family that this is how we know God hears our prayers. It says: “And we can be confident that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will. And we know he is listening when we make our requests, we can be sure that he will give us what we ask for.”

Did you forget how blessed we are that our omniscient and mighty Father is willing to make His way known to us? Like I said – He wants to show us exactly what to do in every situation. So much so He promises, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you” (Psalm 32:8). Here’s exactly how to figure out God’s will for each intersection in your life:

First, make sure you have NO unrepented SIN in your life. I mean, dig deep. Meditate about this one. The Holy Spirit is great about reminding us of that time we didn’t do what was right. For some of us this exercise is easier than others. I know for me stuff surfaces all the time. When it does, I repent. I acknowledge and ask for forgiveness from God. Simple. (Don’t keep doing the SIN! Romans 6:1-14.)

Listening to God while holding onto unrepented SIN in our heart is like using a foggy and unreadable compass. After I confess and repent of my sin, I ask for direction.

Next, read the Scripture regularly and with a seeking, open heart. One of my favorite verses is Psalms 119:105 – the Bible is like a light on a dark path. Wow, imagine walking and being able to see where you’re going at night without stumbling!

Lastly, and this is important, God’s Holy Spirit that dwells inside of us. My goodness, what a wonderful and amazing gift our Heavenly Father has given each of His children! You know, the Spirit provides truth and also guides us when we read the Word and pray. We MUST listen patiently for the leading of the Spirit, often given to us quietly in our hearts as we spend time with Him.

Hey, remember…when you ask the Lord to reveal His will to you, DON’T expect instant answers. Mom always said – waiting builds character! And besides, rushing into something SO important, well, you might go down the wrong path and miss out on God’s very best for you! Take the time to seek Jesus’ plan for your life and remember when you do: He will provide everything you need to follow Him!
