Think Outside the Box

by Dave Jackson

I’m not sure who came up with it, but the first time I heard “think outside the box”, I thought – man, that is “good.”  We really “do” need to see things from a different perspective.  For instance, wouldn’t it be telling if you could see the way you prospect from a “fly on the wall” point of view?  You’d probably cringe!

Often, we catch ourselves, don’t we?  We’re talking with the kids and then think, “wow – that’s just not me!”

That’s what thinking outside the box is.  It’s getting better at the quality of our thinking – like taking thinking to the next level.  We’re wired that way, let’s face it.  So it makes sense that we really do become a direct result of what we think.  Figuratively.  Because I know there are some of you that might be thinking – okay, when I was a teen all I could think about was pizza… and I didn’t become that.  (Well, maybe we did in a way… where’s the jogger?)

Okay, so if we improve our thinking – guess what?  It just makes sense that the quality of our lives will improve.  And there just isn’t any other way to do it.

I.Q. tests given to children ages 2 – 4 years, 95% of those toddlers were found to be highly creative with curious, questioning minds – and an ability for abstract thinking.  95%!

They tested these same kids at 7, and then only 5% still demonstrated high levels of creativity.  What did we do to them!!  Well, they had to “learn” to conform.  They were taught if you want to get along, you had better “go along”.

They had learned to color between the lines.  Sit in neat little rows.  Do and say what other kids did and said.  And over time, the wonderful fearless spontaneity was lost.  These kids learned to suppress ideas and insights that were “unusual.”

Great.  Now we know we’re messed up, how do we get better?

Remember that creativity is your birthright, a fundamental part of your nature – so you can tap into it at any time no matter how long it has been.  And to get started, here are two things I’ve got for you to start your out-of-the-box experience.

First, imagine that there is a much better, cheaper, faster way to do your business – and somebody else had already discovered it and was going to snag all your prospects and you’d be left with zero – out in the cold.  Second, imagine doing exactly the opposite of what you are doing today.  Allow yourself to think, considering how current trends will change your business.
